Renal Access Surgery Peritoneal Dialysis Catheter
About Insertion of Peritoneal Dialysis Catheter
-
A peritoneal dialysis catheter, or PD catheter, is a soft tube placed into the abdomen. It allows dialysis fluid to run in and out through the lining of the abdomen, so dialysis can be done at home rather than at a dialysis unit.
-
Peritoneal dialysis suits patients who want to dialyse at home and keep more flexibility in their week. The catheter is what makes it possible, and it is inserted before dialysis is due to begin.
-
Insertion is done under general anaesthetic, usually by keyhole surgery through small cuts in the abdomen. The tube is tunnelled under the skin and comes out through a small exit site. The procedure usually requires about an hour.
